Early Viking Sword Godfred with Damascus blade and Scabbert.

The original of this beautiful reconstruction once was wielded by the dreaded Danish King Godfred (also called Gudfred or Gudrød).

Until his dead in 810 king Godfred lived and ruled in Hedeby, also called Haithabu (close to the town of Schleswig) the most important Viking settlement on the Jutland Peninsula. The sword was made in the 8th century and got the typical form of an early medieval Viking sword:

a short, slightly curved cross guard, a double-edged and straight blade with a broad fuller and a wide, three lobbed pommel.

This sword is crafted by hands only.

The guard and the three lobbed pommel are made of malleable cast iron.

The folded damascus steel blade has about 100 layers and is hand-forged and ground to its perfect form.

The wooden gip is leather covered.

The blade has got a distinctive fuller which offers both flexibility and a lesser weight.

The edges of the blades are not sharpened.

The sword comes with a leather-wrapped wooden scabbard and a sword-belt of cowhide.

We offer the same sword in two models with a tempered spring-steel blade:

- regular version: DHBM-0116696618
